Your blog sucks!

When you write a blog, your hope is that someone will read it and maybe take something out of it that is relevant to them.  This is, after-all, how conversation starts.

blogging, blog commentsWhen you don’t get a comment or two on your blog, you can become despondent.

However, the fact that you have no comments is not the end of world.

But…

What about your comments on other blogs?

Blog comments

Rule 101 (unless you are a gratuitous spammer) for me is to make sure that, if you are going to comment on other peoples blogs, to add to the conversation.

Everyone of course likes to read things like;

  1. Great post, really enjoyed it.
  2. I agree with your opinion.
  3. Absolutely right.

But if that is all that you write, then you are not really engaging in a conversation.

By all means complement the author, but put in the context of adding value.

“Great post. I was thinking more about what you said regarding <<subject>> and my own view on this is…..”

This does a few things;

  1. The author of the post really knows that you have actually read and digested what they’ve said.
  2. You have contributed to the conversation and people will pick up on what you’ve said.
  3. You have promoted yourself as someone who is genuinely interested in the topic and this may, in turn, get people to come to your blog.

Blog disagreement!

It is perfectly alright to disagree with the author.

In fact, this can often lead to lively debate and further learning and consideration for everyone engaged in the conversation.

But be constructive.

  1. Your post sucks.
  2. You make no sense.
  3. Who needs your opinion anyway.

These do not contribute to a lively conversation in the same way that their positive counterparts also fail.

Far better to say something like;

“I am not sure I agree with <<subject>>. To me, <<subject>> is more about…..”

Again, you are engaging in debate and conversation.

So please do comment when you feel you have something to say.

If you don’t that’s perfectly ok. Just read the post, take from it what you will and move right along.

You can always comment another day!

What are your thoughts on comment quality?
